School Crest

“A school without a crest and motto is rather like a boat without a rudder. We had nothing to steer by, no noble through that belonged peculiarly to us to inspire and guide us, no symbolic picture to remind us of that through till our crest became a reality, an almost living reality. The crest seems to us a sentient thing, looking down on us today, as it will on the girls in this school hundreds of years hence, encouraging and inspiring us with its wonderful symbolism of health, strength, purity, and cheerfulness.

In the foreground is the green grassthe symbol of growth. The school has grown since its first foundation, when its members were few, it is growing now and it will ever grow. It will grow perhaps to be the biggest and finest in our island, grow to be famous for the fine women it produces, women whom their country will be proud of.

The dark blue mountains – the colour of the night sky suggests courage and strength, as undying as the everlasting hills. The choice of a mountain to figure in our crest is a peculiarly happy and apt one. The pride of town – the pride of our Island is the hill with their luxurious vegetation and fertile valley have won for are Island, the name of “The Pearl of the Indian Ocean”, “The Gem on the Brow of India” and other names as beautiful. What more appropriate than a hill for the crest of a school which lies in the heart of the “hill fortress,” in the country of hills?

Behind the hills is the rising sun suggestive of hope – the hope that is borne with the dawn of a new day – a youth which after all synonymous. The season of golden youth is the season of hope. The time of our youth in school is but the dawn of that day when we shall step forth into the glorious light of the “wider world” to take our place as “women with our race”.

As the background of the sun is the light blue sky symbolic of purity and serenity teaching us that through youth is a time of joy and pleasure yet behind all this should be that serenity and steadfastness of purpose and depth of character – deep as the sky – which alone can make a perfect woman.

A deo Auxilium – Our help cometh from the Lord – It is wonderful to think that these words of the psalmist written thousands of years ago which thrill and inspire us today will inspire and thrill thousands of generations yet to come. As we look up at the crest – to its grass, sun, sky, and “hills from whence cometh our help” so will those who come after us look up at the undying hills, grass, sky and sun which do not merely represent the four House colors, but means something as lofty as the hills and deep as the sky and think of what it has stood for and will ever stand for.”
